ICC World Cup 2019: England Players' Rating

England was able to make the final of the tournament after a gap of 27 years. The hosts were overwhelming favourites for the tournament and they were able to go all the way to the final. England won six out of the nine matches in the league stage to finish at the third position in the point table. We take a look at England Players’ rating.

In fact, England had veered off the track when they lost their league stage match against Sri Lanka. However, they were able to pull up their socks in the last two league matches against India and New Zealand to qualify for the semifinal. Furthermore, they were able to thrash their arch-rivals Australia convincingly by eight wickets in the semifinal.

England clinched their maiden title as they defeated New Zealand in the final.

Here is the England players’ rating:

Jason Roy: 9/10

The England opener Jason Roy continued his good form in the showpiece event. Roy was able to hit the ground running and played his game in attacking manner. The right-hander scored 443 runs in the seven innings at an average of 63.29. and a strike rate of 115.36. The England opening batsman scored four fifties and one century in the World Cup. Furthermore, he played a brilliant knock of 85 runs from only 65 balls in the all-important semifinal against Australia. Roy also scored a superb inning of 153 runs against Bangladesh.

Jonny Bairstow: 8.5/10

The England opening batsman Jonny Bairstow was able to provide good starts to the team with Jason Roy. Bairstow was able to time the ball to perfection and played two crucial knocks for England when it mattered the most for the side. The right-hander scored a fine hundred against India and New Zealand in the must-win matches for England. The talisman batsman scored 532 runs in the tournament at an average of 48.36 and strike rate of 92.84. Bairstow also scored two centuries and as many fifties in the competition.

Joe Root: 9/10

The England Test captain was one again team’s best batsman in the tourney. Root was the root of the batting line-up and he was holding the team together. The right-hander was the team leading run-getter with 556 runs which he scored at an average of 61.78 and strike rate of 89.53.

On the other hand, Root scored two centuries and three fifties for the England side. Root played the anchor’s role for the team and he was able to hold one end. The right-hander played with gumption and he was the fulcrum of the batting order.

Eoin Morgan: 6.5/10

The England skipper was able to lead his team with aplomb. Morgan played a record-breaking knock of 148 runs off just 71 balls against Afghanistan. The southpaw was able to hit the ground running from the get-go and he added the finishing touches to the team. Morgan scored 371 runs for England at an average of 41.22 and strike rate of 111.08. The left-hander scored one century and one fifty in the World Cup for the hosts.

Furthermore, Morgan was able to lead England from the front and he backed his players to get the best out of them.

Ben Stokes: 8/10

The talisman all-rounder was able to deliver the goods with both bat and ball. In fact, Ben Stokes took a spectacular catch in the first match of the tournament against South Africa. Stokes was able to get going with the bat as he amassed 465 runs in the 10 innings at an average of 66.43 and strike rate of 91.19. Furthermore, Stokes scalped seven wickets in the 12 innings in the competition.

The southpaw batsman scored four half-centuries in the tournament as he provided the finishing touches to the England team.

Jos Buttler: 5/10

A lot was expected from Jos Buttler but the explosive batsman could not hit the straps in the tournament. The right-hander scored 314 runs in the 12 innings at an average of 34.67 and at a stunning strike rate of .122.83. On the other hand, Jos Buttler was decent behind the stumps as he did a good job for the team.

Buttler played a crucial knock of 59 runs in the final of the tournament against New Zealand to get England close to the target.

Chris Woakes: 8/10

The all-rounder was able to make the most the overcast conditions as he was able to get the ball to swing. Woakes was right on the money with his line and length as he scalped 16 wickets in the 11 innings of the tournament. The right-handed batsman also scored 132 runs to add the finishing touches to England’s innings.

Woakes also kept a tight grip on the run rate as he conceded his runs at an economy rate of 5.25 and bowled with an average of 27.88.

Jofra Archer: 8.5/10

The gun fast bowler was able to breathe down the neck of the opposition batsmen with his brisk pace. In fact, Archer was brutal with his bouncers and the opposition batters had a tough time facing him in the middle. The lanky fast bowler snared 20 wickets in the 11 matches of the tournament at an average of 23.05 and an economy rate of 4.57. The fast bowler was also accurate in the death overs as he was able to consistently hit the blockhole. Archer was ruthless with the ball and had no mercy for the batters.

Archer also bowled the tensed Super Over against New Zealand in the final of the World Cup. The fast bowler was the leading wicket-taker for England.

Mark Wood: 7.5/10

Just like, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood also impressed with his brisk pace. Wood was accurate with his line and length and thus he scalped 18 wickets at an average of 25.72 Furthermore, the tall fast bowler conceded his runs at an economy rate of 5.16. Wood was the second highest wicket-taker for England.

Adil Rashid: 6/10

The leg-spinner did a good job for England in the middle overs. Rashid scalped 11 wickets in the 12 matches but he was not able to keep a check on the economy rate as he conceded his runs at 5.72 However, Rashid bowled with a poor average of 47.82.

Liam Plunkett: 5.5/10

The fast bowler was decent with the ball for the English side. Liam Plunkett was able to hit the right areas in the middle overs. Plunkett scalped 11 wickets in the eight matches of the tournament and he found a place in the playing XI according to match conditions. The England pacer conceded his runs at an economy of 4.86 and bowled with an average of 24.73. Plunkett was able to take the crucial wicket of Kane Williamson in the final of the tournament.

The lanky fast bowler took three wickets in the all-important final.


Moeen Ali: 4/10

The all-rounder didn’t get a lot of chances in the final XI as he was not at his best. Ali played only five matches for England in the tournament. The southpaw batsman scored 75 runs in the five matches and didn’t get the chance to face a lot of balls. Furthermore, Ali took five wickets in the mega event.
