Sri Lanka’s players showed a lot of grit in the first session of the fifth day of the Delhi Test, as they lost just one wicket of Angelo Matthews before lunch in the pursuit to avoid the series loss.
Dhananjaya De Silva and Dinesh Chandimal showed a lot of resistance in the first session. Sri Lanka began the day at 31/3 and went into lunch with the score at 119/4. Ravindra Jadeja took the only wicket of Matthews who edged one to slip and got out for just one run.
Dhananjaya completed his second Test fifty and looked solid while facing Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. De Silva went into lunch with his score at 72. On the other hand, Dinesh Chandimal survived a scare, as he was clean bowled off a beauty by Ravindra Jadeja at 27, but he stopped by the umpires to check the legitimacy of the delivery.
Chandimal was adjudged not out after the reviews showed that Jadeja had stepped over the line.
Sri Lanka needs to play out two more sessions to draw the match and salvage some pride from the series. They are trailing 1-0 in the series after losing the second Test in Nagpur. However, chasing 410 to win the match Sri Lanka is currently 291 runs behind with six wickets in hand.
India has a minimum of 59 overs in the day to pick up the remaining six wickets to win the three-match series 2-0.
