India vs South Africa 2019: Twitter Reacts As Umpires Call Off The Day's Play Early Due To Heavy Rain
Updated - 03 Oct 2019, 03:39 PM
Team India dominated the proceedings of day one of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam to go at tea for 202 runs without losing a wicket. However, there was no play possible after the tea due to heavy downpour compelling the umpires to call the day off.
Rohit Sharma, who played his first Test as an opener was the highlight of the day. There were a lot of speculations over his promotion as a top-order batsman in red-ball cricket, but after two sessions, and an unbeaten 115, he’d put many of those doubts to rest.

Barring a few overs from Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander in the morning, India openers – Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal dominated the proceeding. The openers put on India’s first fifty-plus opening stand in ten innings to get things going for the host.

The afternoon session turned out to be better for India and two well-set batsmen made the South Africa cricketers go for a leather hunt. Dane Piedt, in particular, was never allowed to settle and back-to-back sixes from Rohit against the offie helped him move into the nineties.
Rohit Sharma got into his maiden hundred as an opener and fourth overall with a punch towards the extra cover. Although Rohit hogged the limelight, Mayank Agarwal played a stylish knock of 84 runs before bad light forced an early Tea break.

No play was possible in the final session due to rain, giving du Plessis and Co. some respite. The downpour was pretty heavy and any chance of a restart was far fetched thought. However, there will be no early start on the second day of the Test.

So Rohit Sharma has now scored Test hundreds on debut and debut as opener, six years apart. In between, his Test career has been a trial

Mayank Agarwal was classy as well as he gave a good support to his senior player. He was batting in the same way as he has been batting in last few domestic seasons. #INDvSA
