Shubman Gill is making the most of his promotion at the top of the order in the ongoing Indian Premier League. For the second game in a row, the youngster scored a fifty as Kolkata Knight Riders beat Kings XI Punjab by seven wickets to stay in hunt for a playoff spot. The right-handed batsman, who had scored 76 against Mumbai Indians earlier this week, top-scored with 65 as the Knight Riders chased down 184 without much trouble.

Opening the batting alongside, Chris Lynn, the youngster let his senior partner do the early damage.  By the time the 12th over had ended, Gill had managed to score just 34 off 31. However, he did not take long to show the immense talent he has. The youngster targeted no less than India’s Test spin spearhead and Kings XI skipper R Ashwin to get into groove. He charged Ashwin’s first ball to loft it in the air over long-on.

A couple of balls later, a slog sweep sent the ball over backward square leg before a well-timed four brought his half-century, making his father go wild in the stands. Gill lost the likes of Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Andre Russell from the other end but it did not affect him as he anchored the chase brilliantly. His 65-run knock came off 49 deliveries and contained 5 fours and a couple of sixes.

“It feels great, my first MoM at my home ground. Can’t get better than this. It was important to build partnership. I was striking it at 80-100 but the run-rate was still going around 9-10, so that’s when I decided I had to stay in there. Even some relatives from my village came to watch so it’s great to play in front of everyone. We have one more match to go, and it would be very nice if we can win that and make it into the play-offs,” said Gill after receiving the Man of the Match award.
