Former India cricketer, Virender Sehwag observed that the Delhi franchise, for years has made incorrect and questionable decisions regarding letting players go before the auction.

Delhi traded off Trent Boult before this IPL to Mumbai Indians. This decision came to bite them back as Boult rattled the DC top order, in the final and the qualifier 1. The Kiwi was adjudged the player of the match in the final for his figures of 3/30. The left-arm pacer picked key wickets of Marcus Stoinis, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shimron Hetmyer.

Boult is not the only valuable player Delhi have let go: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag on a chat show with Cricbuzz said several players have won matches and title after Delhi has left them. Sehwag said that not only Boult but players like AB de Villiers, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell have become superstars after playing for Delhi. This season as well, Rahul Tewatia won matches for Rajasthan while he played last year for Delhi.

Boult picked 25 wickets in 15 matches at an economy of 7.97. He was highly instrumental in MI’s success, in particular with the new ball in the powerplay. The former Indian opener Virender Sehwag feels that Delhi has bought these talented players, created them, battered them, and then they let go of such assets.

Talking to Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said, “Trent Boult is not the only player which Delhi Capitals have let go of. They let AB de Villiers go who has done wonders for Royal Challengers Bangalore. When they play against Sunrisers Hyderabad, they let go of David Warner. When they play against Kings XI Punjab, they let Glenn Maxwell go.

“There are too many players which Delhi bought, and created and then they let go. Trent Boult is one of them.”

However, the former Delhi skipper also understands the reason behind Delhi deporting Boult. He said that earlier the IPL was to be held in India, before the arrival of the pandemic, so the Kiwi wouldn’t have been as dangerous as he was in the UAE. Sehwag explained that in Dubai, pacers get help from the conditions which wouldn’t have been the case in the capital city of India.

“IPL was to take place in India, so maybe that’s why Delhi let go of him. If Delhi had known that the IPL will happen in Dubai, then they might not have let go of Boult, because in Dubai, fast bowlers definitely get some help. Because the weather has started going slightly colder, so the ball started swinging as well,” Virender Sehwag added.

Shreyas Iyer led the Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final. However, Delhi’s challenge proved too futile against a dominant Mumbai team. Delhi, however, has several positives to take from what could be called a successful IPL campaign.
