IPL: Top Five Fights Among Indians in the History of the Tournament

Cricket is a gentlemen’s game but with the constant changes, the pressure of doing better every time they come out often highlight’s the player’s ego. It turns into verbal exchanges between players which often crosses the line of what’s acceptable. The growing competitive nature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches have compelled cricketers to exchange expletives at each other

A plethora of unpleasant fights over the course of its 12years history has struck the famous T20 league shifting the focus from the game. Often the tournament has grabbed the headlines quite a number of times for negative reasons.

With the IPL 2019 already in its mid-stages, take a look at top five nasty fights among Indians that took place in the IPL:

Munaf Patel and Amit Mishra, IPL 2011

A heated exchange took place between two India teammates – Munaf Patel and Amit Mishra when Deccan Chargers were taking on Mumbai Indians. Amit Mishra struck two back to back boundaries off Munaf in the last over of the innings.

As a result, Munaf lost his temper exchanged verbal volley. If this was not enough, both the cricketers collided against each other which turned the event even more nasty. The umpires had to intervene to separate Munaf and Amit Mishra.

Later on, Sachin Tendulkar had a word of Munaf who showed no intentions to stop.

Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, IPL 2008

The slapgate incident that rocked IPL in the very first season has so far been the biggest fight in its history. Harbhajan Singh got engaged in a heated altercation with S Sreesanth after the game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab.

The fast bowler took a dig at Harbhajan after Mumbai’s loss with didn’t go well with the off-spinner. Harbhajan reverted back with a slap that left the Kerala pacer in tears. Eventually, Harbhajan sustained a suspension for the rest of the tournament while Sreesanth was let off with a warning.

Last night in IPL 2019, we witnessed two animated skippers Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin going up against each other when Royal Challengers Bangalore took on Kings XI Punjab.

Batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore lost Virat Kohli early in the innings. The dismissal of Kohli animated Ravichandran Ashwin as the Punjab skipper gave a heated and abusive send-off to Kohli. Meanwhile, Kohli is someone who doesn’t take things easily. He gave a befitting reply when Ashwin holed out to him in the last over of the game off Umesh Yadav. Kohli looked all charged up and hurled abuses at his counterpart after completing the catch.

However, it all ended as soon as the game got better and Ashwin admitted that there is no ill feeling between him and Virat Kohli.

Harbhajan Singh and Ambati Rayudu, IPL 2016

Harbhajan Singh has had many heated exchanged throughout his cricket career. The latest addition was an ugly altercation with his Mumbai Indians teammate Ambati Rayudu during the 2016 edition of the IPL.

Mumbai was locking horns with Rising Pune Supergiant when Saurabh Tiwari struck a boundary off Harbhajan. Ambatu Rayudu despite his valiant efforts couldn’t stop the boundary which irked the senior off-spinner. Harbhajan charged toward the long-on fielder where Rayudu was fielding and hurled expletives towards him.

Rayudu also gave it back to Harbhajan while moving towards his teammate.

The incident took place during the 2013 edition of the IPL when Royal Challengers Bangalore clashed against Kolkata Knight Riders. Virat Kohli got out while he tried to hit the third six of Pradeep Sangwan. The Kolkata burst out in joy with the dismissal of Kohli which tousel him, and he hurled a mouthful to the opponents.

Meanwhile, like Kohli, Gautam Gambhir also doesn’t shy away from expressing, and he confronted Kohli which turned out to be an ugly fight between two Delhi teammates.

However, it was another senior Delhi cricketer Rajat Bhatia who calmed both the players to bring the situation under control.
