Team India’s World Cup preparation took a big blow on Sunday when Kedar Jadhav picked  a shoulder injury while fielding during Chennai Super Kings‘ game against Kings XI Punjab. Jadhav is an integral part of the team and is certain to play all the games provided he remains fit. The middle-order batsman has been a revelation with his spin bowling.

Time and again, skipper Virat Kohli has replied on Jadhav for breakthroughs and the latter has rarely disappointed. Unsurprisingly, it will be a big blow for India if Jadhav misses out on the World Cup. Things are just not looking  promising at the moment. According to Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming, Jadhav will not be available for the remainder of the IPL.

“Kedar Jadhav’s getting an X-ray and a scan tomorrow,” Fleming said after the match against Kings XI. “We’re hopeful for him. I don’t think we’ll see him again in this tournament for us. So now his attention will turn to what it looks like for the World Cup.

“He’s in some discomfort but we just need to be accurate with our assessments tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it’s nothing too serious but it didn’t look that good,” he added.

Jadhav suffered the injury while fielding on the leg-side boundary. He injured his left shoulder while diving to stop a ball in the 14th over. The India star was attempting to stop an overthrow from Ravindra Jadeja. He managed to stop the ball, but immediately clutched his arm, and walked out to receive some medical attention. Jadhav did not take the field for the rest of the innings with M Vijay coming in as the substitute.

And in case Jadhav fails to recover, there is a big possibility Rishabh Pant might make it to the World Cup team. The wicketkeeper-batsman is one of the standbys for the World Cup with Ambati Rayudu in the list too. But with Rayudu struggling with his form at the moment, Pant is more than likely to get the nod for the World Cup if Jadhav is ruled out.

Pant is in fine form at the moment, having scored 401 runs in 14 games this IPL. Moreover, Pant also has experience of playing in England. Last year, he had impressed for India A as well as the senior team in England. The likes of Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly have already said the youngster deserved to be in the team and so one can expect Pant to make it to the World Cup if Jadhav fails to recover.
