New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson had to swallow the bitter pill as his side lost to India in a cliffhanger. Williamson hit an entertaining 48-ball 95 but it went in vain as the visitors held their nerves in crunch situation to inflict a favorable result.

However, Williamson took Jasprit Bumrah for a ride. Bumrah, who is one of the finest pacers in the modern game, proved to be expensive. He was taken for three boundaries on a trot by the Kiwi skipper. Bumrah conceded 45 runs in his four overs and failed to bag a stick.

“Bumrah is probably the best T20 bowler in the world so he is a big challenge as we have seen in every game that he has played. But you are trying to find your options as best you can and trying to keep up with the run rate which we were able to do but yeah just the shame that we could quite get across the line,” Williamson said at the post-match press conference.

At one stage, the hosts needed 2 runs to win off 4 deliveries. Mohammed Shami sent back Williamson and got Ross Taylor out in the final delivery to restrict New Zealand to 179/6.  Chasing 18 to win in the Super Over, Rohit Sharma hit two consecutive sixes to take India home. “The experience India have I think saw them come through some crunch moments in this game but it’s a game of small margins so we do need to learn from this to be the better side,” he added.

Kane Williamson reflects on yet another heart-wrenching loss

The 29-year-old didn’t lose his humor though as he threw light on his side’s history with Super Overs. It brought back memories of the nightmarish 2019 World Cup where the Kiwis lost due to an inferior boundary count.

“Super overs certainly have been our friend. India had a very good first inning total on that surface. Guys fought back nicely after the start that India got with the bat and then we were able to build partnership and take the game deep. Yeah pretty disappointing to be the wrong side of the result after doing a lot of hard work to get so close but certainly much-improved effort from the first two games,” he said
