Set up by Strauss following the death of his wife aged 46 to lung cancer on December 2018, the initiative provides grants for research into rare forms of the disease and offers emotional and wellbeing support to patients and their families. To draw awareness, players from both sides will wear special commemorative shirts including Ruth Strauss Foundation logo, red caps and red numbers on the back of their playing shirts. The foundation has also urged the fans who will be present at the stadium to wear red- Ruth’s favourite colour.

Andrew Strauss hopes to replicate the success of the McGrath Foundation. It was set up by former Australia cricketer Glenn McGrath in 2005 after the passing of his wife, Jane. He raises funds to support patients suffering from breast cancer by turning the annual Sydney Test completely pink.

The Ruth Strauss Foundation day at Lord’s is not only a celebration of Ruth’s life but will raise awareness and vital funds to produce better research into rare forms of lung cancer,” Strauss said.  You think about the incredible work the McGrath foundation have done and is it possible to replicate that over here? I’ve played all my cricket at Lord’s and it is an Ashes year it just felt like if the MCC are willing to make this happen then we should try and put this together,” he added.

Meanwhile, the supporters can also make donations in the stadium by cash or card and at home via a text message service. There will also be a lottery with a variety of prizes to be won, including cricketers red cap they wore during the day’s play.
