Mahela Jayawardene Hits Back After Fans Question His Patriotism For Skipping Road Safety World Series

Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene was involved in a heated exchange of tweet when some of his compatriots questioned his patriotism after he decided to skip the ongoing Road Safety World Series in India. A total of five teams are taking part in the T20 cricket tournament.

The series is featuring some of the biggest names in cricket from India, Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa. But while a number of former Sri Lankan players have arrived in India for the series, Mahela Jayawardene decided to give it a break.

And his decision once again made some of the Sri Lanka fans question his commitment towards the country. The legendary cricketer has faced such a situation a number of times ever since retiring from the game. Since bringing down curtains on his illustrious career, he has not been associated with Sri Lankan cricket in any capacity, much to the frustration of some of the fans.

His latest action once again infuriated some and they hit back at him on social media. But unlike the previous times, Mahela Jayawardene decided to respond this time on Twitter. He stated that he could not feature in the series because of some personal commitments as he tweeted:

“This is a exhibition tournament to promote road safety in india.. not a international tournament and people are getting paid to play in this.. I personally had other commitments to my family during this period. I hope this will clear what ever misguided information Being posted.”

Sri Lanka Legends have one game and lost one in the series so far. They started the competition with a thrilling seven-run win over Australia Legends before losing by five wickets to India Legends. Their next game is against South Africa Legends on Friday (March 13).
