The ability to bowl yorkers at will separates Jasprit Bumrah from the rest. Talking about yorkers, one bowler who has done it all his life is Lasith Malinga. As the duo plays for the same franchise Mumbai Indians in IPL, a section of people thinks that Malinga helped Bumrah to get the yorker right. However, the Indian fast bowler has revealed that it isn’t true.

Bumrah has evolved into one of the best bowlers across all formats of the game. The Baroda bowler joined the Mumbai Indians camp in 2013 but shot to prominence after some consistent performances in the 2016 edition of IPL. Later, he followed it up brilliantly to make things fall in place for him across the formats in International Cricket.

Lasith Malinga didn’t teach me anything on field – Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah, who is one of the best exponents of yorker in white-ball cricket, has often credited his ability to execute them to the time he had spent with Malinga at Mumbai Indians. However, in the latest interview with Hindustan Times, Bumrah explained that he learned mental toughness during his times with Malinga, but not his yorkers.

“Many people believe that he taught me the yorker, but that’s not true,” Bumrah said. “He did not teach me anything on the field. The things I learned from him are about the mind. How to handle different situations. How to not get angry. How to make a plan for a batsman.”

“We had rubber balls, super tight ones, with a seam, it used to swing,” Bumrah says. “We did not play on pitches, so there was no seam movement or length balls or caught behinds. It was all about trying to hit the batsman on the full. If you want to take wickets, you have to bowl yorkers. I still believe that’s what makes me street smart,” Jasprit Bumrah added.
