Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar hailed Prithvi Shaw for his temperament after the youngster’s brilliant debut in the first Test against West Indies.

Prithvi Shaw totally justified the hype surrounding him by scoring a scintillating ton in the first Test against West Indies. The 18-year old played a stroke-filled knock of 134 to light up Rajkot. Shaw looked unfazed on his debut, hitting a flurry of boundaries to showcase his immense potential.

He reached his hundred off just 99 balls. In doing so, Shaw became 15th Indian batsman to score a hundred on debut. Overall he is the 105th player to achieve the feat in Test cricket. The opener also became the fourth youngest player of all time to hit a debut ton and the second youngest Indian to make a Test century after Tendulkar.

And while his technique might not have impressed Sunil Gavaskar much, the legendary batsman was mighty impressed by his fellow Mumbaikar’s temperament. Gavaskar also said that Shaw is well in line to open the innings in Australia.

“He showed by the way he batted and he showed that he belongs to this Test level showed that he may not score hundreds in every match but he will get you runs and that is important. He is keen to do well, he has got this great gift of being able to read this line and length early and get into positions early and he is right…he may not have the best technique but he has the temperament. Temperament is what separates the men from boys and this young kid certainly has the temperament,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Coming to the game, India thrashed West Indies by an innings and 272 runs inside three days. Gavaskar said the massive win will give India confidence going into the Australia series.

“A win is win. every time you win you grow in confidence. Virat and everyone in the team know when they go to Australia with these massive wins it will give them confidence,” said Gavaskar.

The second and last Test will start on October 12 in Hyderabad. The two teams will then take on each other in 5 ODIs and three T20Is.
