After a dismal outing in the second Test at Centurion, India’s one drop batsman Cheteshwar Pujara made sure he was cautious enough during the third Tets.
Pujara, known for his temperament and skill, was run-out in both the innings of Centurion Test, inviting an unwanted record to his name.
After KL Rahul edged Vernon Philander to give India a disastrous start, Pujara walked in to steady the innings. To everyone’s amazement, he took a long time to get off the mark.
In the ongoing Test, Pujara opened his account in the 54th ball against a potent South African pace attack. It was a half-volley on the pads from Lungi Ngidi as he nudged it behind square to get off the mark.
As soon as Pujara completed the run, Indian dressing room lit up, and everybody had a good laugh mixed with some applause. Pujara took it in a good spirit and winked at the dressing room and gave everyone a thumbs up.
Pujara became the second India batsmen to take maximum balls to get off the mark in Tests after Rajesh Chauhan. Chauhan took 57 balls to open his account against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad in 1994, while Pujara today took 54 balls to do so.
However, the world record is held by John Murray of England against Australia at Sydney in 1963. He took 80 balls to get off the mark.
India was at 45 for 2 at lunch during the first day of the third Test at Johannesburg.
