The way Wriddhiman Saha is performing at the moment behind the stumps, it would not be easy for Rishabh Pant to reclaim his spot in the playing eleven of Tests. Saha replaced Pant behind the stumps at the start of the home season and has been going from strength to strength with each passing day. Saha’s brilliant form has also coincided with Pant’s struggles in limited-overs format.

And to make sure that the young wicketkeeper-batsman gets some much-needed match time ahead of the series against West Indies, the Indian selection committee has decided to release him from the Test squad. Pant was a part of the squad for the ongoing day-night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens but has now been released, according to PTI.

The left-handed batsman will join the Delhi squad that is currently playing in the Super League of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20. He will thus be available for Delhi’s next two Super League matches, against Haryana on November 24 and Rajasthan on November 27, and for the semi-finals and final if Delhi make it that far.

“Rishabh will be playing all the six matches (3 T20Is and 3 ODIs) against the West Indies. The selectors thought it’s only prudent that he goes and plays in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Delhi,” PTI quoted a BCCI official as saying.

Rishabh Pant looks to regain form:

It would not be exactly wrong to say that time is running out for Rishabh Pant. The highly-rated youngster, who has been tipped to be MS Dhoni’s successor, has not really lived up to the expectations in recent times. His performance since the tour of West Indies has been really dismal. He has struggled not only with the bat but also with the wicketkeeping gloves.

The domestic competition might help regain his lost confidence as he will be desperate to prove his critics wrong in the forthcoming series against West Indies.
