Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar have approached Maharashtra government to retain the 21,348 square foot plot in Bandra and develop it as an indoor cricket academy. The Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Foundation Trust (SGCFT) was allotted 21,348-square foot plot in Bandra three decades ago to open an indoor cricket academy.

The terms and conditions of allotment were revised in 1999, 2002, and 2007. However, no construction has been carried out on the foundation yet. Now, Gavaskar insists on developing the academy along with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Both, Sachin and Gavaskar met the Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray at his residence ‘Matoshree’ in Bandra.

As per a report published in the newindianexpress, “Mumbai suburban guardian minister Aditya Thackeray had also called the meeting in this regard and asked the “MHADA officials to work to facilitate the process,” said sources requesting anonymity. This clearly indicates that the process is in pipeline and we might witness the confirmation very soon.

However, there is a long list of already existing cricket academies of Indian international players. Madan Lal is the Director of the Madan Lal Cricket Academy in Delhi. Former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag also has an academy at Jhajjar in Haryana. In Mumbai, the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy of Dilip Vengsarkar already exists.

India is witnessing a growth of players in the sport. Cricket has become a global sport and some famous Indian players have risen from cricket academies established in the nation. This indeed is a great initiative by the legends of the game to provide world-class training and facilities to youngsters aspiring to represent India on the international stage.
