Shahid Afridi Reveals Why He Didn't Show Interest In Pakistan Head Coach Position

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has said that he didn’t show interest in becoming coach of Pakistan because he does not have the temperament to coach them. Pakistan recently roped in Misbah-ul-Hq, their former Pakistan, who retired from international cricket in 2017.

“I don’t have the temperament to coach the national team. Moreover, I am fit as ever so my focus is on playing cricket right now and try and give my best for the team,” Afridi told Gulf News.

He added that he would be more interested in coaching junior teams: “I would be interested in coaching young boys under 18 and 19. It is that age they need coaching.”

The 44-year-old retired from international cricket in 2016 but went on to play another international match when he represented World XI against West Indies in May 2018.

Afridi continues to play T20 leagues around the world and will soon play for Qalandars in the T10 league soon. He is not expected to take up any coaching assignment till the time he continues to play.

Talking of Pakistan’s coach, newly-appointed Misbah replaced Mickey Arthur in the job, who performed the role for three years. After PCB dropped Arthur as the head coach, Misbah was the front-runner for the job even before he applied for the position.

He threw his hat in the ring at the last moment and unsurprisingly, got the top job. He was also appointed as the chief selector of Pakistan cricket team. Misbah’s first assignment started with Pakistan’s home ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The first ODI of the series was a washed-out affair. Persistent rain in Karachi saw the game being called off just a couple of hours after the official time of the toss. Keeping the weather in mind, PCB rescheduled the second ODI and now it will be played on Monday instead of Sunday. After the Test and T20I series, both the teams will play a two-match Test series in UAE.

Following the Test series, Misbah will brace up for the foreign challenge as Pakistan will travel to Australia to take on the hosts in a three-match T20I series and two-Test series.
