Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has come down hard on South Africa after their dismal show in the second Test against India. South Africa proved no match for the formidable hosts as India won the game by an innings and 137 runs. With the win, India also sealed the three-match series with a match remaining.

After piling up 601 for 5 (declared), India bowled out South Africa for 275 on the third evening but did not reveal whether they would ask the visitors to follow-on. But on the fourth morning, India became the first team since 2008 to enforce a follow-on on the Proteas. The Indian bowlers then did their job brilliantly by bowling out the Proteas for just 189.

Ishant Sharma gave India the perfect start by dismissing Aiden Markram on just the second ball of the day. A couple of hours later, South Africa found themselves five down for only 79. Ravichandran Ashwin made the early inroads by taking the big wickets of skipper Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar.

Temba Bavuma dug in, adding 38 before he was pouched brilliantly by Ajinkya Rahane at slip. Quinton de Kock (5) and Senuran Muthusamy (9) then returned to the pavilion for single figures to leave their team at 129 for 7. Vernon Philander (37) and Keshav Maharaj (22) delayed the inevitable for a while before Umesh Yadav ended their 56-run stand after tea by dismissing the former. The hosts then swiftly claimed the final two wickets to seal the series.

Hours after the game, Shoaib Akhtar took to Twitter to slam South Africa for their recent performances. He pointed out their dismal show in the World Cup before talking about the ongoing series. Shoaib Akhtar also congratulated India for the win as he tweeted:

“Disappointed with South Africa’s performance. First, ODI failure in World Cup. Now Test Cricket also going down. I dont see potential. Captaincy & performance really below par. Nevertheless, winning 11 series in a row at home is a big achievement. Congrats India.”
