Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, on Tuesday, said that he and his ex-teammate Sachin Tendulkar could have scored 4,000 more runs together with the modern ODI rules. Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar’s partnership on the cricket field was one of the most successful in the history of the game.

The two legendary batsmen opened the batting for the first time against South Africa in 1996, adding 126 and did not look back since then. Between 1996 to 2007, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly amassed 6609 runs in 136 innings. They had 21 hundred and 23 fifty partnerships while opening the innings.

Their tally of runs remains the highest in the list of partnerships as openers.  Overall, their tally is 8227 in 176 innings with 26 century and 29 half-century partnerships. No other pair in ODIs have managed to even cross the 6,000 run mark so far.

And on Tuesday, ICC tweeted about the same. Along with a photo of Sachin and Sourav Ganguly, ICC tweeted their partnership stats, noting that it still remains the most prolific partnership in ODIs as there is no other pair who has crossed 6000 runs between them.

Sachin noticed the tweet and was quick to respond to it as he asked Sourav Ganguly what would have been their final run-tally with the modern rules, writing: “This brings back wonderful memories Dadi. How many more do you think we would’ve been able to score with the restriction of 4 fielders outside the ring and 2 new balls? @SGanguly99 @ICC”

And in his usual swagger, Sourav Ganguly replied: “Another 4000 or so ..2 new balls..wow .. sounds like a cover drive flying to the boundary in the first over of the game.. for the remaining 50 overs ..@ICC @sachin_rt”
