Stuart Broad continued to show why he is an indispensable part of team as he made his presence felt with bat and ball. After hitting a fifty in 33 balls to join Allan Lamb and Andrew Flintoff in the list of fastest Test half-century for England, Stuart Broad came back strongly and picked up two wickets.

Broad was firm in his approach with the bat as he took the West Indies bowlers to the cleaners. It looked like he was also enjoying the knock as he continued to build on his reckless innings. Incidentally, it was his highest score since 2013 . The runs were also important as it helped England reach 369-run mark after they lost overnight batsmen Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope early.

Broad said those were important runs as it changed the complexion of the game. He was also of the opinion that the West Indies bowlers bowled well in the morning and he tried to keep up the momentum. The senior fast bowler also said that he had worked with coach Peter Moores to hit the ball in different areas like Shane Warne did in the 2005 Ashes.

“They were quite important runs. It was about changing the momentum of the innings. West Indies bowled beautifully this morning and I think if I had gone out there and tried to play regulation I think there was a ball with my name on it,” Broad told a news conference.

“I tried to up the momentum, hit the bowlers off a length and try and take Kemar (Roach) and Shannon (Gabriel) away from what they’d done so well in the first 40 minutes.

“Tactically it was the right thing to do and something I’ve worked on with Peter Moores at Nottinghamshire. He brought me the example of Shane Warne who didn’t look particularly pretty at times but hit balls in different areas and was really effective, especially in the 2005 Ashes.”

As umpires called it a day, the West Indies were reeling at 137/6 with the dependable pair of Jason Holder and Shane Dorwich at the crease.

If West Indies are bowled out inside 200 runs, England will seemingly have a huge advantage in front of them.
