Team India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri has advised uncapped players, in particular, Suryakumar Yadav to be patient – and keep on doing the good work they had done in domestic cricket. This comes in after Yadav was overlooked for the Australia tour despite having staggering numbers in the domestic circuit and IPL for the past few years.

Yadav, apart from piling mountain of runs in domestic cricket has also been influential in Mumbai Indians‘ (MI) success in the last three seasons. The right-hander accumulated 512 runs in 2018, 424 in 2019, but both a strike rate of less than 135. However, the 30-year-old is at his peak this season- in 13 matches he has scored 374 runs at an average of 41 and a strike rate of 153.

Suryakumar’s match-winning 79* against Bangalore was garnered a lot of attention, and everyone once again questioned the reason behind his exclusion from the national team. Ravi Shastri appreciated Yadav’s knock and after the game took on Twitter advising the batsman to stay strong and patient.

In the recent interview with Times Now’s Navika Kumar, Ravi Shastri talked about Suryakumar Yadav. He said that there are 3-4 other players like Yadav who are in the reckoning for the national squad, but since the team is already packed with heavy talent and experience it is challenging to crack in.

Shastri gave an example of the time in his career when the batting order was set, and everyone was certain of their places which made it difficult for anyone else to get in the middle-order even after scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket.

In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Ravi Shastri said, “That’s why we say to these youngsters – be patient. Like Suryakumar Yadav there are 3-4 other players on the fringe but when you have a team that is packed with talent and experience it becomes very difficult to get in.

“I remember a period in my career when 1-6 in the Indian batting line-up everyone was certain of their places and it was difficult for anyone to penetrate that middle-order and yet you had some people who were scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket and knocking at the door,” he said.

Youngsters like Priyank Panchal and Abhimanyu Easwaran have also missed out on a Test spot even after consistently performing for years in domestic cricket. Shastri continued to advise the youngsters to be patient and be ready to grab the opportunity whenever it arrives. The coach said that the players who are vying for a spot in the national squad should remain positive instead of getting disappointed.

“For all the youngsters I have one message – be patient and when you get your opportunity grab it with both hands. That’s the time you don’t mess up. Instead of being disappointed be positive in your mindset that when you get the opportunity make the most of it,” Ravi Shastri added.

The Indian team will travel to Australia for a full-fledged tour. The limited-overs leg beings 27th November and the Test series commences on December 17th.
