Former India fast-bowler Zaheer Khan turned 39 on Saturday (October 7). Arguably, the finest fast-bowler to play for India, Zaheer was an integral part of the team that won the World Cup in 2011. With 610 international wickets, Zaheer finished his career as one of India’s most successful bowlers, being the fourth-highest wicket-taker for India across formats. He also has the second-highest wickets tally – 311 – for an India pacer in Tests, behind the legendary Kapil Dev‘s 434.

Zaheer made his international debut in 2000 and did not take long to become an integral part of the time. However, an injury saw him losing his place in the team for close to two years before a breakaway season for Worcestershire in 2006 brought his career on track. The left-arm pacer took a staggering 78 wickets in the county circuit and made a successful return to the team.

He finally became the spearhead of the pace attack after his dazzling performance during the tour of England in 2007 when his 18 wickets at an average of 20.33 helped India to win the three-match series 1-0. In ODIs, he played a vital role as the leader of the pace attack during India’s victorious 2011 World Cup campaign with 21 wickets to finish as the join-highest wicket-taker. Overall, he finished his career with 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, taking 211, 281 and 17 wickets respectively.
