Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah showed once again why he is Indian Test captain Virat Kohli’s go-to man when he brilliantly set up South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal to end a stubborn partnership in the second innings of the hosts of the Centurion Test.

The pacer had suffered an injury scare in the first innings, but after a brief break where he got treatment from the Indian team physio Nitin Patel, Bumrah came back with vigor to pick two wickets for 16 runs as South Africa was bowled out for 197 runs with Mohammed Shami taking 5/44, giving India a healthy lead of 130 runs.

India, in the second innings, didn’t fare that well with the bat, as they made just 174 runs with Rishabh Pant top-scoring with 34 runs, while Ajinkya Rahane made 20 and KL Rahul made 23 runs. However, these runs were enough to set the home side a tough target of 305 runs to chase.

Mohammed Shami then gave India the perfect start by removing Aiden Markram for 1 run. However, captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen tried to steady the ship a bit before Mohammed Siraj ended Petersen’s knock at 17 runs when he had him caught behind by Rishabh Pant.

But then Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen frustrated the Indian bowlers for more than 22 overs, adding 40 runs in the meantime. Both were happy to leave the balls outside off stump and made runs when the bowlers erred in line or length and bowled in their half of the pitch.

Van der Dussen was particularly hard to dislodge as he made 11 runs in 65 balls, but then Kohli went to his trusted Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah cleverly began to set up Van der Dussen as he kept bowling length balls at him which went away from him.

However, he suddenly went wide of the crease and hit the same length, but the ball came in sharply, and though van der Dussen covered the length, he missed the line and the ball hit the top of the off-stump, ending his vigil at the crease.
