Umesh Yadav, who came into the playing at the cost of Hanuma Vihari, made an immediate impact dismissing Aiden Markram. India sensed early blood and kept the momentum to remove the dangerous looking Dean Elgar to have South Africa at 13 for two.

Mohammed Shami also joined the party getting a fine edge of Temba Bavuma. While the umpire ruled out as a not out, the fielders were confident to go for the review and claiming the third of the evening session. Theunis de Bruyn and nightwatchman Anrich Nortje resisted well to go back unscathed at 36 for three, still trailing by 565 runs.

Previously, it was all Virat Kohli who once again proved why is one of the modern-day great. After having a poor outing in the first Test, the India skipper made full use of the opportunity to post his seventh double hundred. Besides, Kohli also crossed his 7000 Test runs and leapfrogged Dilip Vengsarkar in the list.

Resuming the day at 273 for three, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane had to survive a hostile period of fast bowling. But once the batters eased up, there was nothing for the bowlers as they went in search of the leather. Although Rahane departed after a well-made 58, Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja ensured the South African bowlers remain at bay.
