The India National Cricket Team captain, Virat Kohli advised Ambati Rayudu not to step out, though find a way to hit one over the covers off Santner when the spinner was keeping it tight for the batsman. Rayudu, who had recently come to the crease was finding it hard to mint gaps. Meanwhile, the spinners, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner found the opportunity to keep it tight for the pair. As Santner executed the plan well, Virat’s suggestion helped Ambati overcome the issue.

Virat’s suggestion spoils Santner’s plan

During the 31st over of India’s chase, the slow left-arm bowler was bowling pretty nicely to Rayudu. On the first three balls, he bowled it outside the off-stump; provoking Rayudu to open his arms and thus make a mistake. Though the line wasn’t that deceptive, his flighted deliveries were. The right-handed batsman was seemed reluctant to pick his shot when Kohli, standing at the other end suggested him a plan.

The India captain was recorded on the stump mic saying,

‘yeh jaan bhuj ke daal raha hain; taki tu bahar nikal ke maare’

When translated in English, it meant –

‘He’s purposely bowling there so that you can step out and hit him’

Taking no time in obeying what the doctor ordered, Ambati didn’t step out and yet slammed the next ball over the covers for a superb boundary by standing in his crease.

India closes in on a series win

In the five-match ODIs against New Zealand, India was 2-0 up heading into the 3rd game. Though the venue was same as that of the previous ODI, the Bay Oval, the performance of the India National Cricket Team got better. Bowling first after losing the toss, India got the Kiwis on the mat early on. Much like the past two matches, the openers didn’t perform. Later, the pressure got built and apart from Ross Taylor, who scored 93 runs; not many batsmen were among runs. Hence, inside 50 overs, NZ’s innings got wrapped on 243.
