Such was the occasion for Bangladesh cricketing fraternity on Sunday (June 10) that even their men’s team left all their chores and were glued to the television sets, as their women counterparts were taking on fancied India in the final of Women’s Asia Cup. India, the six-time winners, were the firm favourites against Bangladesh who were playing their first-ever final.

And it turned out to be a game that will remain in everyone’s memory for a long long time. Bangladesh had their back against the wall when the final over started. Their top five batswomen were back in the hut, and they needed nine runs off the final over.

The task looked even more improbable when they lost two wickets on the fourth and fifth balls. The equation was finally down to two runs off the last delivery.

The stage was set for a thrilling finale, as both the countries were anxiously waiting for the fate to get decided. Well, in the end, it was ecstasy for Bangladesh and heartbreak for India. Bangladesh’s number eight Jahanara Alam dived at the striker’s end to seal a three-wicket victory for her side. Deepti Sharma’s throw from midwicket to push the final into a Super Over proved worthless, as Bangladesh sealed their maiden title.

And as soon as the game finished, Bangladesh’s men team burst into celebrations. Led by senior players like Tamim Iqbal and Mashrafe Mortaza, the Tigers celebrated the moment to the fullest.

Here is a clip showing the celebrations:

Earlier in the game, India had managed only a modest total of 112 for nine in the 20 overs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored half of those runs, remaining unbeaten on 56 off 42.
