Gautam Gambhir might have played his last innings in competitive cricket. The southpaw will retire from all forms of the game after the ongoing Ranji Trophy tie between Delhi and Andhra.

Gautam Gambhir retires as the third highest run-getter among Indian Test openers. The left-handed batsman last played for India in November 2016 when he featured in the first Test against England in Rajkot. He managed only 29 and 0 in the game before being dropped.

Having represented India in Tests from 2004 to 2016, he amassed 4119 runs at an average of 42.92 with nine hundreds and 22 fifties. In his ODI career – from 2003 to 2013 – Gambhir accumulated 5238 runs at 39.68, with 11 tons and 34 half-centuries. One of his finest knocks in ODIs came in the final of 2011 World Cup when he top-scored for India.

Gambhir also played 37 T20Is for India from 2007-2012, scoring 932 runs at 27.41 and a strike rate of 119.02. Even in the final of the World T20I, he had top-scored for India.The southpaw had scored 75 as India beat Pakistan to lift their first and only World T20I title till date.

Well, the southpaw deserved a fitting end to his glorious career and it is safe to say that he got one. The World Cup-winning star smashed a memorable ton in the first innings of the ongoing Ranji Trophy game. Resuming day three on 92, Gambhir did not take long to reach the three-digit mark. Mohammed Khan ended Gambhir’s knock. Prior to that, the former India opener scored 112 with the help of 10 boundaries.

Coming to the game, Delhi were in a commanding position at the time of Gambhir’s dismissal. The national capital were 221 for 2 when Mohammed Khan sent back Gambhir. Andhra had scored 390 in their first innings.
