Glenn Maxwell was at his devastating best during the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Sunday (October 27). Lasith Malinga’s decision to bowl first on a good batting pitch turned out to be disastrous as Aaron Finch and David Warner came out all guns blazing. The Australia openers  plundered the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts to race to 122 inside 11 overs.

Lakshan Sandakan ended the stand when he accounted for Finch after the Australia skipper scored 64 from just 36 balls. And while the crowd was expecting Ashes hero Steve Smith to come out at number three, the hosts sent Glenn Maxwell in the middle. Maxwell had the platform to go all out and his record against Sri Lanka meant the history was also in his favour. The hard-hitting batsman averages 219 against Sri Lanka in T20Is.

Glenn Maxwell started his show right from ball one and eventually scored 62 from just 28 balls to help Australia close their innings strongly. His knock was studded with seven four and three sixes. As usual, Maxwell’s shots were far from being orthodox and the pick of the lot was his reverse shot  for a four.

The shot came in the 19th over bowled by Nuwan Pradeep. The Sri Lanka pacer bowled a low full toss around off and Maxwell quickly played a reverse shot to send the ball past the fielder at short third man, much to the surprise of his teammate Pat Cummins. The Australia pacer called the shot ‘freaky’ and was all praise for Maxwell after the hosts won the game by 134 runs.

“Yeah freaky, I actually said to him kind of tongue in cheek. At one stage, I thought ‘jeez Maxi’s quite tampered today. Isn’t as all over the place like he normally looks with his batting’. Then I looked at the scoreboard and he was 45 off 15 balls or something and I thought ‘that’s just crazy’. He’s brilliant,” said Cummins.
