With every passing moment in the ongoing first Test between India and South Africa, Ravichandran Ashwin has showed what he can offer with the ball. Not very long ago, the Tamil Nadu ace was an automatic choice in the playing eleven. However, in the last one year or so, he has fallen down in the pecking order.

In fact, the ongoing game is his first international game this year. But the lack of game time has not affected his form at all as the off-spinner looked sharp in the game. On day two, he put India on the driver’s seat by picking up two quick wickets. On day three, he dismissed Faf du Plessis to end the 115-run stand between the Proteas skipper and Dean Elgar.

Later in the day, Ravichandran Ashwin came up with a peach of a delivery to send back well-set Quinton de Kock. The South Africa wicketkeeper was batting on 111 when he was castled by the India spin spearhead. Ashwin bowled a straighter delivery which undid de Kock. Before the dismissal, he bowled two perfect off spins and de Kock was perhaps expecting another spinning delivery.

The South Africa lunged forward to defend the ball which instead of spinning away from him, sneaked through between his pad and bat.

Here is a clip of that delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin:

Soon after de Kock’s dismissal, Ravichandran Ashwin also dismissed Vernon Philander to complete a well-deserved five-wicket haul. At the end of the day, South Africa were 385 for 8 in reply to India’s mammoth total of 502.
