A team should have 7 Indian players- capped or uncapped- and 4 overseas players in the playing XI. A team can also go with 8 domestic players and 3 overseas players in a match if they want to. However, the number of overseas players cannot exceed 4 in any match.

However, this rule might change in IPL 2022. With the addition of two more teams in IPL 2022, the tournament will witness the participation of 10 teams.
