Pakistan on Wednesday defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in the first Test at Galle International Stadium to gain 12 crucial ICC World Test Championship points.

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique’s unbeaten 160 helped the visitors to chase a record 342 at the specified venue and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Shafique defied the bowling efforts of Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya who picked a nine-wicket haul in the first Test.

Sri Lanka vs Pakistan 1st Test: As it happened

Earlier in the game, Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka opted to bat first and in-form batter Dinesh Chandimal scored 76 as the hosts managed to post 222 on Day 1. Pakistan were almost blown away in the first innings had skipper Babar Azam not shown his determination. Babar scored 119 to bridge the deficit at 218 after Jayasuriya picked his third five-wicket haul playing in as many innings.

Chandimal rose once again to the occasion with his unbeaten 94 in the second innings after the fifties from Oshada Fernando (64) and Kusal Mendis (76) boosted Sri Lanka’s lead to 341. Pakistan spinners Mohammad Nawaz (5/88) and Yasir Shah (3/122) shared eight wickets between them in the second innings.

Despite a terrific opening stand of 87 between Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq, Pakistan were reduced to 222 for three with Jayasuriya getting the better of Babar on 55 before the close of the fourth day. However, with 120 runs left to be chased on the final day, Shafique excelled with his second Test hundred, though he survived three dropped catches in the meantime.

The Pakistan opener surpassed his previous best score of 136 not out to take his side past the finishing line despite Jayasuriya chipping in with wickets in intervals but couldn’t get the better of Shafique.
