England defeated India by 28 runs in the recently-concluded first Test to take the lead in the five-match IND vs ENG 2024 series. The Ben Stokes-led side wrapped up the game inside four days to stun Team India.

India were the firm favourites to start the series with a win and they looked destined to take the lead after dominating the first innings. The Rohit Sharma-led side bowled out England for 246 runs before scoring 436 runs to take a big lead of 190 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja scored half-centuries for the hosts in the first innings.

However, England bounced back and thoroughly dominated the second innings of the game to register a famous win. A brilliant knock of 196 runs from Ollie Pope helped England pile up 420 runs to set the home side a target of 231 runs. In reply, India were bowled out for 202 runs. Left-arm spinner Tom Hartley starred with the ball in the second innings as he picked up 7 wickets.

England creates a monumental record:

The stunning win in Hyderabad has not only helped England take the lead in the series but has also seen them create a huge record. They became the first team in 69 years to beat India in Hyderabad. India have played a total of 9 Tests across two venues in Hyderabad so far and have lost only one of them.

They played their first Test in Hyderabad against New Zealand at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in November 1955 and the game ended in a draw. The second Test at this venue was played between the same sides as well in 1969 and it ended in a draw too before India finally won a Test in Hyderabad when they beat New Zealand by 10 wickets in 1988.

After 1988, India played their first Test in Hyderabad in 2010 and the venue was Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. New Zealand were the opponents once again as the Hyderabad Test of the 2010 series ended in a draw. In 2012, India faced New Zealand once again at the same venue and won the game by an innings and 115 runs.

In 2012, the home side defeated Australia by an innings in Hyderabad before beating Bangladesh by 208 runs in 2017. In 2018, India beat West Indies by 10 wickets before England ended their unbeaten streak at the venue with a 28-run win.
