Former England cricketer Michael Atherton who was appointed as captain of his national team at the age of 25, believes that India’s batting stalwart Virat Kohli stands as the poster boy or the biggest superstar in the world of cricket and that no one is bigger or better than him at the moment.

Atherton was all praise for Virat Kohli during a recent podcast with Sky Sports Cricket along with another former England skipper Nasser Hussain. In that podcast, both of the Englishmen spoke about a wide range of topics and they were also discussing about the best in the business currently.

Whenever the topic of the greatest ever cricketers is brought to the fore, how can it be possible for anyone to not mention the name of Virat Kohli? After all, he is the trendsetter, a force of nature, and the most disciplined cricketer to ever grace the game.

In the years to come after Kohli calls time on his cricketing career, which is supposed to happen sometime in the future, it wouldn’t come as a shock if the BCCI ends up building a statue for him. More than 20,000 runs and counting, the best part about the 35-year-old is that he is always on the lookout to improve himself and get better.

In terms of fitness and in terms of being a proper team man the only thing that Kohli has lacked over the years is luck. While an ICC trophy continues to elude him, Michael Atherton feels that fans can’t do much but get drawn into the greatness of Kohli.

“He is by far the biggest star in the game here. The supporters are often drawn to the superstars of the game and there is none bigger than Virat Kohli here,” Atherton said.

The Delhi-born batter is currently out of cricketing action after he requested Rohit Sharma and the team management to let him withdraw from the first 2 of a 5-match Test series against England at home, owing to personal reasons. In his absence, KL Rahul slotted in at number 4 and also scored 86 runs from that position but India ultimately lost the 1st Test by 28 runs in Hyderabad. Virat Kohli is expected to join the team before the start of the 3rd Test in Rajkot.

“He’s Magnetic And Charismatic”, Michael Atherton Praises Virat Kohli’s Energy On The Field

Michael Atherton went on to further state that Virat Kohli is someone who is really fascinating to watch. Atherton noted that even when his bat remains quiet, the 35-year-old never misses out on spreading positive energy on the field, calling him a magnetic and charismatic character.

“I find him an absolutely fascinating cricketer in general. When he is on the field, even when he is not contributing, he just buzzes around with so much energy. He is a very magnetic and charismatic cricketer,” Atherton concluded.
