In a spectacular showcase of power-hitting prowess as well as mature and sensible batting, Yashasvi Jaiswal treated fans to his third Test century in the 3rd Test against England at the Niranjan Shah stadium in Rajkot. Jaiswal completed his sensational century by taking 122 deliveries and left the visitors’ bowling attack reeling in the 3rd innings and heavily under pressure. With that century, Jaiswal became the first batter after Virat Kohli to score over 400 runs in the Test series against England.

Initially, Yashasvi Jaiswal started off cautiously in classic Test fashion while his opening partner and skipper Rohit Sharma took charge. Accumulating just 9 runs from his first 39 deliveries, Jaiswal bided his time and played balls according to its merit. However, upon Rohit’s dismissal just before Tea, the 22-year-old seized the moment, unleashing a barrage of boundaries to shift the momentum.

Jaiswal’s change in approach became evident as he approached his half-century as he bashed England’s most experienced seamer James Anderson, who had taken his wicket in the 2nd Test at Vizag. With the pitch favoring batsmen, Jaiswal made amends for his early dismissal by Mark Wood in the 1st innings by launching an assault on Anderson.

The English camp, initially buoyed by Rohit’s early departure, soon found themselves on the back foot as Jaiswal showcased his masterful stroke play. His control over the game was apparent when he dispatched spinner Tom Hartley for a colossal six to reach his fifty, signaling his intent to dominate.

Jaiswal’s onslaught didn’t relent, as he continued to pepper the boundaries against the bowling of Joe Root and Rehan Ahmed. Welcoming Ahmed back into the attack in the 31st over, Jaiswal confidently danced down the track to deposit the ball over long-on for a commanding six. He followed it up with another maximum off Root’s part-time spin, displaying his versatility and adaptability.

Yashasvi Jaiswal right after Virat Kohli in elite list

Yashasvi Jaiswal moments after scoring his century, had to leave the middle due to a niggle probably on his back and he has been retired hurt for now. But nonetheless, the 22-year-old UP-born cricketer has become the first Indian batter since Virat Kohli to score more than 400 runs against England in a Test series.

Kohli who ruled himself out of the entire 5-match Test series due to undisclosed personal reasons, had scored 593 runs during the 2018 series when India toured to England. The Three Lions had claimed the 5-match series by 4-1 but the series will forever be remembered for Kohli’s antics.

Current skipper Rohit Sharma during the 2021 series, was the closest to challenge Kohli’s target but the former could only amass 368 runs in the Test series. And Yashasvi Jaiswal with his 104 today, has now scored 435 runs and he is yet to get out in the 3rd innings at Rajkot. He will be aiming to score 50 more runs at least if he hopefully comes out to bat tomorrow. And even if he doesn’t come out to bat everyone will hope that his injury is not much serious.
