West Indies limited-overs skipper Nicholas Pooran said performing well against a strong team like India will send a message across the globe about their own quality.
West Indies are due to host the Men in Blue for three One-Day Internationals and five T20I matches, starting with the first ODI on Friday at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
We can come out and challenge: Nicholas Pooran
Pooran and his men suffered a back-to-back whitewash in a three-match ODI series against Pakistan (away) and Bangladesh (home). They will now face a challenge from a second-string India led by opener Shikhar Dhawan.
“They (India) have millions of players who can come and do that role. They have match-winners with bat and ball and we can come out and challenge them here (Trinidad) and Florida, it will send a message across the cricket world. And it will be fabulous for us as a group as well,” Pooran told the Times of India.
We are trying to find out the right mindset for ODI cricket: Nicholas Pooran
Things were better for West Indies in the T20I series as they blanked the Tigers 2-0 before being drubbed in the longer white-ball format. Pooran is hoping that his players will find the right template in the forthcoming ODI series and play exciting cricket.
“We are trying to find out the right mindset for ODI cricket. Once we get that, we will be fine, but now it’s about forming a template for each format. We are looking forward to the series and our aim is to be competitive and play exciting cricket. We will look to put our best foot forward,” he added.
West Indies have called back senior all-rounder Jason Holder to their ODI squad for the India series. The 30-year-old, who plays all formats for the national team, was rested for the ODI series against Bangladesh.
