KL Rahul recorded his first win as captain on Thursday in the 1st ODI between Team India and Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club. Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill smashed half-centuries in India’s 10-wicket win over the hosts. Pacer Deepak Chahar was named the Player of the Match for his bowling heroics.

Deepak Chahar, who bowled unchanged for seven overs with first spell figures of 3/27, was well supported by Mohammed Siraj (1/36), who worked up the brisk pace while bowling the ideal Test match length. Prasidh Krishna (3/50) and Axar Patel (3/24) also got their share of middle and lower-order victims while Kuldeep Yadav (0/36) was restrictive despite going wicket-less.

Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan belted sparkling half-centuries as India thrashed Zimbabwe by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series on Thursday. Shubman Gill made an unbeaten 82 while Shikhar Dhawan scored an unbeaten 81 as the pair peeled off an unbeaten stand of 192 for the first wicket.

Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan have stitched 3 100-plus stands in the last 4 ODIs. Shubman Gill topped the scoring charts with 205 runs in the 3 ODIs against the West Indies while Shikhar Dhawan finished second with 168 runs. Both of them hit 2 fifties and missed out on centuries by fine margins in the recent Caribbean tour.

Deepak Chahar-led Indian bowlers reduced Zimbabwe to 31 for 4 and then 110 for 8 before a counter-attacking ninth-wicket stand of 70 off 65 balls between Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava lifted them to a somewhat respectable total.

India 192 for 0 (Gill 82*, Dhawan 81*) beat Zimbabwe 189 (Chakabva 35, Ngarava 34, Axar 3-24, Chahar 3-27, Prasidh 3-50) by 10 wickets

India is expected to go in with the same team in the 2nd ODI as none of their batsmen barring openers got the chance to bat in the first game, while each of the bowlers shined in the 1st ODI.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul was selected captain of the 16-man squad for the three-match One-Day International series against Zimbabwe, which begins on August 18. KL Rahul has not played competitive cricket since leading Lucknow Super Giants to the IPL 2022 playoffs. KL Rahul underwent sports hernia surgery in Germany after being ruled out of the 5-match T20I series against South Africa at home.

KL Rahul also missed the crucial trip to England and was ruled out of the West Indies tour after contracting Covid-19 while undergoing rehabilitation in Bengaluru. He has amassed 1634 runs in 42 ODIs averaging 46.69 including 5 tons. He may open in the 2nd ODI if Indian management wants to make changes to the Shubman Gill- Shikhar Dhawan’s recent exemplary opening partnership.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings with Rohit Sharma in the ODIs against England. He made scores of 31 not out, 9, and 1 in the England ODIs, where he averaged a paltry 20.5 amassing 41 runs. He top scored in the 1st ODI against hosts West Indies while opening with Shubman Gill.

His 97 of 99 balls consisted of 10 fours and 3 sixes. He was disappointed after missing out on a century. He scored only 13 off 31 balls in the 2nd ODI and 58 off 74 balls in the 3rd ODI to be the 2nd highest run scorer after fellow opener Shubman Gill in the series with 168 runs averaging 56.

He scored an unbeaten 81 off 113 balls including 9 fours against Zimbabwe in the 1st ODI and was involved in a 192-run unbroken partnership in India’s comfortable 10-wicket victory.

Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda, who has scored a ton against Ireland in T20Is, scored 115 runs in 5 ODIs averaging 38.33. Deepak Hooda made his ODI debut against West Indies in February this year and played a couple of games. He scored 60 runs averaging 30 in the 3-match ODI series on the West Indies tour besides picking up a solitary scalp. He wasn’t required to bat in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill scored 64 runs off 53 balls -his maiden ODI fifty – before being run out by Nicholas Poooran in the 1st ODI won by India against West Indies. His innings comprised 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Shubman Gill followed his 64 with another excellent inning of 43 off 49 balls including 5 fours in the 2nd ODI. In the 3rd ODI, he was unfortunate to miss out on a ton as he scored an unbeaten 98 off as many balls before rain interruptions.

He was Man of the series against Windies amassing most runs -205 and scored an unbeaten 82 off 72 balls including 10 fours and 1 six while opening again against Zimbabwe. He now averages 67.2 in 7 ODIs amassing 336 runs.

Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson played only 1 ODI in Sri Lanka 2021 tour where he scored 46 runs before managing 72 runs in 3 matches on the West Indies tour. He has scored 118 ODI runs so far averaging 39.33 and will be preferred to bat in the middle order. He will compete for a spot in the XI with uncapped Rahul Tripathi. He wasn’t required to bat in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe.

Ishan Kishan (WK)

Ishan Kishan who has played 19 T20Is has played only 3 ODIs so far where he amassed 88 runs averaging 29.33 with a highest of 59. The left-hander, however, has been quite consistent, with 543 runs in 19 T20Is at an average of 30.17 and a strike rate of 131.16. He will compete for the middle order slot with uncapped Rahul Tripathi. He wasn’t required to bat in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe.

Axar Patel

Axar Patel scored 85 runs in 2 ODI innings playing the 3 ODI matches on the West Indies tour, besides picking 2 scalps. Axar Patel was the Man of the Match in the 2nd ODI against West Indies, picking 1/40 bowling 9 overs besides scoring an all-important 35-ball unbeaten career-best 64 which was pivotal to India’s come-from-behind victory chasing 312. His innings comprised 3 fours and 5 sixes.

He wasn’t required to bat in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe, but had a successful outing with the ball, picking up 3 scalps in 7.3 overs and conceding 24 runs.

Mohammed Siraj

Ever since he made his ODI debut in 2019, Mohammed Siraj has only been able to play 9 ODI matches. His best bowling figure was 3/29 against the West Indies during the home series earlier this year. He picked 4 scalps in 3 ODIs in the recent West Indies tour, averaging 29.5. He returned with figures of 1/36 in 8 overs picking the prized wicket of Sean Williams in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe.

Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna has played 13 ODI matches for India, the only format he has made his presence in the Indian colours so far. He may be given another chance in the Zimbabwe series despite poor outings on England tour (2 scalps averaging 63.5) and West Indies tour (1 scalp averaging 92). He picked 3 wickets in 8 overs conceding 50 runs in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe and will probably retain his spot.

The tall pacer was adjudged the Player of the Series in the home series against West Indies earlier this year. In that home bilateral series, Prasidh Krishna had registered his best ODI bowling figures of 4/12. Prasidh Krishna’s nine wickets in the series had come at an average of 7.56, an economy rate of 2.5, and a strike rate of 18.11.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar is returning to top-flight cricket after nearly seven months. He played his last cricket in February and will be auditioning in the 50-over format for a place on the T20I team, which may not be ideal but, under the circumstances, it is the best-case scenario.

For Deepak Chahar, what was to be a six-week layoff for a left quadricep injury, took more than six months and multiple rehabilitation stints at the National Cricket Academy to fix. It meant Deepak Chahar, the second-most expensive pick at the IPL 2022 auction, missed the entire season for Chennai Super Kings and all subsequent cricket for the national team.

He showed his recently developed big-hitting exploits with match-turning knocks: 69* (against Sri Lanka), 54 (against South Africa), and 38 (against West Indies). He has played only 8 ODIs scoring 179 runs averaging 59.67 and taking 13 scalps averaging 26.15. He was the Man of the Match in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe, picking career-best 3/27 in a fantastic 7-over spell after returning to the XI.

Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav’s comeback performance in IPL 2022, in which he bowled more quickly and confidently while scooping up 21 wickets for Delhi Capitals, was a very encouraging sight. During India’s T20I series against South Africa in June, many people anticipated that his illustrious streak would continue.

But due to a hand injury, he was unable to play in the series, go to Ireland and England, or the ODIs against the West Indies. In the fifth T20I match against the West Indies in Lauderhill, he finally got his chance, capturing three wickets in an outstanding bowling display in which spinners claimed all 10 wickets to fall.

He returned wicketless in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe but was economical- 36 runs in 10 overs. In 67 ODIs, he has picked 109 scalps averaging 28.62 at an economy of 5.22. In T20Is, his average is an incredible 14.02 as he picked 44 scalps in only 25 T20Is.
