IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj for IPL 2022.

The IPL 2022 retention list is out with most of the teams having retained four players, which was the maximum limit set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The IPL 2022 will see the addition of two new franchises (from Ahmedabad and Lucknow). The majority of players will go under the hammer which brings another grand auction in the cash-rich league, just like the one in IPL 2011.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will be continuing their hunt for their elusive IPL trophy. Although they were brilliant in IPL 2021 having finished third in the points table but were eliminated in the knockout by KKR.

RCB won’t have the service of South Africa’s swashbuckling batter AB de Villiers as he retired from the game.

Virat Kohli is the only player in the league who is playing for a single franchise since IPL’s inception but he stepped down from the captaincy role at the end of IPL 2021.

Glenn Maxwell to succeed Virat Kohli as RCB captain?

This also means the team will look for a new captain and that could be one of the reasons why they retained Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

Maxwell Maxwell was phenomenal with the bat in his first season for RCB as he ended up the season as their highest-run scorer with 513 runs from 14 innings at the strike rate of 144.10.

Pace bowler Mohammed Siraj has also developed his skills and is progressing at RCB by not leaking enough runs. Siraj has picked 11 wickets each time in the last two seasons.

There will be a massive reshuffle of players as teams are allowed to retain not more than four players subject to the salary price tagged by BCCI.

According to BCCI’s retention policy, the salary of each player in case a team retains three players – Rs 15 crore for Player 1, Rs 11 crore for Player 2 and Rs 7 crore for Player 3.

That means a total of Rs 33 crore will be deducted from the team’s purse before they enter the mega auction of IPL 2022.

The BCCI has also clarified that if the player salary agreed upon is higher than the amount specified above, then the higher of the two shall be deducted from the purse.

Kohli is paid Rs 17 crore by RCB and Maxwell was purchased for 14.25 crore in 2021. It means that the franchise will have to pay an additional sum from the required amount to retain these two players.

List of retained players by RCB with their price tags:

Virat Kohli (15 cr)
Glenn Maxwell (11 cr)
Mohammed Siraj (7 cr)
