Former India head coach Ravi Shastri said Shikhar Dhawan is a gun player and gets overshadowed by the presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
In the ongoing IPL 2022, Dhawan became the second player after Virat Kohli to complete 6000 runs in the cash-rich league.
IPL 2022: Shikhar Dhawan played 200 IPL matches and scored 6000 runs
Dhawan joined Punjab Kings this year after majorly playing for the Delhi and Hyderabad outfits in the IPL.
Dhawan is the most prolific batter in the Punjab team who can provide the perfect start to the innings with his natural range of shots.
The southpaw has scored 307 runs in nine innings at 38.38 and a strike rate of 126.34 so far in IPL 2022
In PBKS’ match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dhawan accomplished two great milestones – he played his 200th IPL match and accumulated 6000 IPL runs.
His unbeaten 59-ball 88 pushed PBKS’ total to 187 and helped them clinch the game by 11 runs. The PBKS opener was awarded player of the match for splendorous knock.
Dhawan has been with the Indian national team for almost a decade, it wouldn’t be wrong to say his rise to prominence was on the lines of Kohli and Rohit.
I call Shikhar Dhawan a gun player: Ravi Shastri
Shastri said Dhawan deserved all the credits and accolades for his achievements.
“I call him a gun player because in this country most of the accolades have gone to Rohit and Virat, but this man has been a serious player right between them when he’s fit,” Shastri said on Star Sports.
Apart from Punjab Kings, Dhawan also played for Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, now-defunct Deccan Chargers, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He played the most IPL games for SRH scoring 2518 runs in 85 innings followed by the Delhi franchise (2066 runs in 63 innings).
