Former Indian player Sunil Gavaskar said Ravichandran Ashwin is flexing muscles for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad in Australia.

Ashwin was selected for India in the previous edition of the mega event, something that bemused many as the Tamil Nadu all-rounder didn’t play white-ball cricket for India for over four years.

Will Ravichandran Ashwin get on the flight to Australia?

Ashwin played the last three games of the group stage in the T20 WC 2021 and bagged six scalps at an economy rate of 5.25. He further played a couple of games in the three-match home T20Is against the Black Caps.

Ashwin wasn’t included in the West Indies and Sri Lanka T20I series as reports suggested that the player was recovering from an unknown injury.

Ravichandran Ashwin is so excited about his batting performance

In the ongoing IPL 2022, Ashwin displayed his intensity with the bat as someone who can play the anchor’s role and if required can turn into an explosive finisher.

The 35-year-old has amassed 183 runs in 10 innings this season thus far with an average of 30.5 and strike rate of 146.4.
He scored an unbeaten 40 off 23 balls against CSK, hitting two fours and three sixes, to take RR past the finishing line in their final group stage match.

I think he wanted to show he can bat anywhere. He started his career as an opening batsman, not at the first-class level maybe, but at the club level. Now he has become one of the greatest spinners in the game. And he also knows that he is a batsman who has got five Test hundreds,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

“He has now shown that he can do it in the ultra-short format and be in the Indian team for the World Cup in Australia. That is his aim and that is why he is so excited about his own batting performance. He’s showing with the ball and with the bat that ‘Hello! Pick me,” he added.

Rajasthan Royals will play against Gujrat Titans on Tuesday (May 24) in Qualifier 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
