Former Indian player WV Raman has a conviction that Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will lead the national team down the road.

Pant made his debut for India in 2017 in a T20I game against England in Bengaluru. The Delhi player emerged as an all-format player who plays a vital role in the middle order and if required can also switch gears as a finisher.

Pant took over the gloves behind the wickets just before MS Dhoni retired from international cricket.

Pant was named Delhi Capitals captain in IPL 2022 after Shreyas Iyer suffered a shoulder injury. Under Pant, the Capitals qualified for the playoffs but failed to make the cut for the final.

Raman, who played 11 Tests and 27 ODIs for India, reckoned Rishabh to learn the task of a captain for the next two years.

Rishabh Pant has a great cricketing mind, but he is on a learning curve; and the last couple of years he has been working on his keeping and fitness and has shown remarkable improvement,” Raman told Cricket.com.

“I believe Pant will go on and captain the national side, and as to when, we will wait and see. For now, he has to learn the ropes in the next one and two years as far as captaincy is concerned,” he added.

Delhi Capitals look like a well-balanced side: WV Raman

Delhi Capitals have won four matches and lost as many in the IPL 2022 and are currently slotted in the sixth position. Raman said the Capitals have a well-balanced side but should take care of their middle-order.

“I think they will need to give a bit of thought about their middle-order and how it is going to shape up,” Raman said.

“They look like a well-balanced side, and the important thing is what happens at an advanced stage when the openers fail,” he added.

Delhi Capitals will take on KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 1 (Sunday) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
