Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener Shikhar Dhawan became the first player to hit 700 fours in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The left-handed batter achieved the feat during the final league stage match of IPL 2022 between PBKS and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium.

The PBKS batter took his boundary tally to 701 and is followed by Virat Kohli (576) and David Warner (561). Dhawan accumulated 460 runs in 14 innings at 38.33 with three half-centuries.

Shikhar Dhawan is the second-most run-getter in IPL

Dhawan is the second-most run-scorer of IPL overall with 6244 runs in 206 IPL games only behind Kohli’s tally (6592).

Dhawan joined Punjab Kings this year after majorly playing for the Delhi and Hyderabad outfits in the IPL.

In PBKS’ match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dhawan accomplished two great milestones – he played his 200th IPL match and accumulated 6000 IPL runs.

The southpaw’s unbeaten 59-ball 88 pushed PBKS’ total to 187 and helped them clinch the game by 11 runs. Dhawan was awarded player of the match for his splendorous knock.

Dhawan remained unbeaten on 62 against Gujarat Titans as PBKS won by eight wickets with 24 balls to spare.

Dhawan also led Punjab Kings in the game against SRH in the first leg as regular skipper Mayank Agarwal suffered a toe injury.

“Even though I am still an important member of the team, I believe that my expertise allows me to contribute in the shortest possible time. In the T20 format, I’ve been doing fairly well. I’ve performed admirably in every role that has been assigned to me,” Dhawan told news agency PTI ahead of SRH clash.

“I’ve been able to maintain consistency in the formats that I’ve played, whether it’s the IPL or domestic cricket, and I’m enjoying it. Consistency means not only consistently scoring in the fifties or hundreds, but also keeping even gaps between them,” he added.

Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad were aleady out of the tournament with Mumbai Indians’ victory against Delhi Capitals helping Royal Challengers Bangalore to seal the final playoffs berth.
