Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) survived a huge scare to defeat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by two runs in the 23rd match of the ongoing IPL 2024. Chasing 183, PBKS finished their innings on 180/6.
PBKS started their pursuit of 183 runs in a poor fashion, losing the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh, and Shikhar Dhawan for just 20 runs inside the powerplay. Sam Curran and Sikandar Raza shared a 38-run stand before a stunning catch from Pat Cummins saw the former depart for 29.
Raza (28) and Jitesh Sharma (19) could not bail their team out of trouble as PBKS found themselves reeling at 114 for 6 in the 16th over. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma tried their best to replicate their heroics against GT but eventually failed. With 29 runs needed from the final over, the duo collected 26 runs from the Jaydev Unadkat over.
Earlier in the game, Nitish Reddy's brilliant half-century helped SRH recover from a disastrous start to post 182/9 in the allotted 20 overs after Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head shared a 27-run stand for the first wicket before Arshdeep Singh dismissed the latter and Aiden Markram in the fourth over. In the fifth over, Sam Curran sent back Sharma as well to reduce SRH to 39 for 3. It was followed by a 25-run stand between Reddy and Rahul Tripathi before the latter was dismissed by Harshal Patel for 11.
Heinrich Klaasen could not do much with the bat and departed for just 9 to leave his side reeling at 100 for 5 in the 14th over. However, Reddy kept going strong from one end and shared a crucial 50-run stand with Abdul Samad. Arshdeep Singh dismissed both Reddy and Samad in the 17th over for 64 and 25 runs respectively. Shahbaz Ahmed and Jaydev Unadkat then helped SRH cross the 180-run mark.
