Watch: Stunned Ruturaj Gaikwad in disbelief as MS Dhoni drops a sitter behind the stumps

Chennai Super Kings, on Monday (April 8), came up with a brilliant bowling performance to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to a modest total in the ongoing game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

KKR arrived in Chennai after scoring 208, 186, and 272 runs in their first three games of IPL 2024. However, the two-time IPL champions could not replicate those batting performances against the reigning champions. Asked to bat first, KKR finished their innings on 137 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs.

Tushar Deshpande gave the hosts a flying start by dismissing Phil Salt for a duck on the very first ball of the game. It was followed by a 56-run stand between Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed both of them in the seventh over to reduce KKR to 60 for 3 from 56 for 1 and the visitors just could not recover from those two setbacks.

They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. As a result, their innings did not get the impetus. And while everything went right for CSK on the field, MS Dhoni made a rare mistake. The former CSK skipper who hardly makes a mistake behind the stumps ended up dropping Andre Russell.

It happened in the 18th over when Russell was facing Mustafizur Rahman. On the fourth ball of the over, the left-arm pacer bowled a slower off-cutter outside the off stump and Russell ended up edging the ball behind the stumps. MS Dhoni was slow to react and eventually failed to grab the catch.

It was a rare mistake from the legendary wicketkeeper batsman and Ruturaj Gaikwad's reaction said it all. As soon as MS Dhoni dropped the catch, Gaikwad was seen putting both of his hands on his head, making it clear that he was stunned by the drop. Fortunately for CSK, the catch did not prove too costly as Russell departed for a run-a-ball 10.

Meanwhile, CSK will be hoping that the batters compliment their bowlers' efforts and put up a good show to power the team to a win. The reigning champions will be desperate to win the game to get back to winning ways after losing their last two games.
