Indian captain Rohit Sharma was happy for his Mumbai Indians (MI) teammate and fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah after the latter was named the vice-captain of the T20I side ahead of the series against Sri Lanka.

Bumrah is seen as a potential candidate to take over the captaincy at some point and the upcoming series against the Lankans will be a great way to test his leadership skills. He already leads the pace attack but his experience will swell when he starts helping Rohit out in the field.

Honestly, it’s a good way for him to step into the leadership role now. He has taken his game to another level and I’m sure he wants to continue to do that even further. But this is only going to add and get him more confident in whatever he wants to do on the field,” Rohit said in the press conference ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka.

Rohit and Bumrah have been playing for MI together and they have worked well in tandem so far. The 34-year-old Rohit is also well aware of how Bumrah’s mind works when it comes to the game and he will be happy to take any advice from the pacer.

It’s nice to have him as a vice-captain for this particular series. Let’s hope everything works out pretty well. I know him closely and I talk to him a lot about cricket. I do understand what sort of cricketing brain he has. So, yeah, it’s nice to have him there as the vice-captain,” Rohit added.

Team India recently confirmed that both Deepak Chahar and Suryakumar Yadav will not be available for the T20I series. The BCCI has also strayed away from announcing replacements and the team will stick with the same squad.
