England batter Joe Root continued his excellent form with the bat as he brought up his 27th Test century in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Root scored at a brisk pace on a surface that barely had anything for the pacers and in the company of Ollie Pope, pushed the English total closer towards New Zealand’s mammoth first-innings total of 553.

He survived the end of the third day’s play, staying unbeaten on 163 alongside wicket-keeper batter, Ben Foakes. As the former skipper walked towards the pavilion, a young fan asked for an autograph and Root obliged.

Root’s knock came to an end on Day 4 when Trent Boult had him caught at cover by Tim Southee. The knock consisted of 26 boundaries and a solitary six. Following Root’s dismissal, the English lower-order was blown away.

They folded up for 539 eventually, conceding a lead of 14 runs in the first innings. Boult was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up a 5-wicket haul, the 10th of his career.
