The chances of Ravichandran Ashwin to make a comeback in limited-overs format dealt a blow when he was ruled out of the Deodhar Trophy.

The right-arm spinner was to lead the India A side in the the triangular tournament but has been ruled out due to niggling issue.

Ashwin has been advised a rest of one week to recover.

In Ashwin’s absence, Ankit Bawne, who was originally in India B, will lead the side after being transferred to India A.

Akshdeep Nath has been transferred to India B to facilitate the change.

Shahbaz Nadeem, the Jharkhand spinner, has replaced Ashwin in the India A side.

He is also the part of the Rest of India squad for Irani Cup.

Ashwin being absent from the tournament will be a missed opportunity for him.

From past seven months, he hasn’t been selected in limited-overs format as the experiment of selectors to test out Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav has paid them benefits.

At no point of time, it felt like both of them are new to the team.

In South Africa, they were the key in team India’s success in ODI series.

They look set to pair each other at least till 2019 World Cup, until and unless Ashwin comes up with an out of the box performance.

The opportunity provided by selectors to Ashwin to lead India A was a big one for him but he is all set to miss it.

IPL will be sole tournament before the tour of England where Ashwin will have an opportunity to do well and make a comeback in limited-overs format.

Though he is the first choice spinner in Test format, as of now.

The Deodhar Trophy will be played between India A, India B and Vijay Hazare Trophy champions – Karnataka.

The tournament will start on March 4 and will be played in Dharamsala.
