After overcoming a calf injury in time for the competition in South Africa, Alyssa Healy is ready to participate in Australia’s opening T20 World Cup match. And now that she has recovered from the first substantial injury layoff of her professional career, the Australian vice-captain is considering being called up to play for Australia in the Women’s Premier League in India.

Since she strained her calf during the T20I tour to India on December 17, Healy has been unable to play cricket.

But she was included in the 15-player team that was selected for the World Cup in a month’s time as well as the Pakistan T20 series that ended last week.

Prior to her calf injury, the 32-year-old had a lucky streak of fitness, and she acknowledged that having to watch from the sidelines had been difficult.

“I’ve absolutely hated every minute,” she said.

“I hated watching the cricket on the TV; I couldn’t be a part of any of the cricket. It’s a lesson for me to make sure I’m looking after myself moving forward if I want to be a part of stuff.”

“I’d love to be a part of it. If I’m not, so be it, (but) I just think the whole experience is going to be amazing for the players to get to go and be a part of that. I sat there at Chinnaswamy Stadium for the first-ever men’s IPL game so the opportunity to sit at the first women’s one would be a really nice moment.”

Women’s players will experience an unheard-of financial bonanza thanks to the IPL, the most profitable T20 competition in the world, and the millions of dollars in television money that have already been committed to its new offshoot.

“It sets us on the precipice of this whole new era for the game,” Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry said.

“It’s going to be really exciting.”
