West Australian fast bowler Lance Morris and veteran pacer Michael Neser have been included in Australia’s squad for the second day-night Test against the West Indies in Adelaide. The selectors have decided to strengthen the pace department due to Pat Cummins’ injury in Perth, and back-to-back Test matches are going to be played later this month.

Skipper Pat Cummins did not bowl during the West Indies’ second innings as Australia beat the visitors by 164 runs in Perth. Cummins is confident of recovering from a small strain to his right thigh on day three of the first Test and is likely to be replaced by Scott Boland if he is unable to play.

Morris, who regularly clocks 150 kmph for Western Australia, has taken more wickets this season than any other bowler in Australia’s domestic Sheffield Shield competition. Neser, who made his Test debut for Australia against England in Adelaide last year, has been one of the most consistent players in Australia for more than a decade.

Lance Morris Has Genuine Pace – George Bailey

Australia selection chair George Bailey said both Lance Morris and Michael Neser deserved their places in the squad for the Test series against the West Indies.

“Michael (Neser) has been with the squad on a regular basis in past seasons and was simply outstanding in Adelaide last summer. He has continued to perform incredibly consistently since and will be warmly welcomed back,” Bailey said in an official statement released by Cricket Australia.

“Lance is another of the outstanding young fast bowlers coming through the ranks. He has genuine pace and his ability to create opportunities for wickets is a real drawcard. It will be a great experience for him to come into the environment.”

The 24-year-old is the top wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield with 27 wickets in five matches for Western Australia this season, with an average of 18.40 and a strike rate of 33.1, including match figures of 9-82 against NSW. Morris played in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Stars before making his Sheffield Shield debut and took 20 first-class wickets at 27.05 in 2020-21.
