Rohit Sharma Surpasses Mohammad Azharuddin To Become Sixth-Leading Run Scorer For India In ODIs

Indian captain Rohit Sharma surpassed former captain Mohammad Azharuddin to become the sixth-leading run-scorer for the Men in Blue in 50-over cricket. Rohit achieved the record in the first match of the three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday, December 4.

Bangladesh skipper Litton Das won the toss and chose to bowl first. Despite a brilliant 73-run innings from KL Rahul, Team India were bundled out for 186 runs. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took five wickets for 36 in his spell, and Ebadot Hossain also starred with 4 for 47. Bangladesh lost opener Najmul Hossain Shanto in the first ball of the run chase.

Before the game, Rohit Sharma needed only three runs to surpass Azhar, and he reached it in style, smashing a four off Hasan Mahmud in the second over of India’s innings.

The 35-year-old right-handed batter has now scored 9,403 runs for India in 234 ODIs. Azhar, the only Indian captain to lead the team to three ODI World Cups, scored a total of 9378 runs in 334 matches for the Men in Blue.

Sachin Tendulkar leads the list of India’s leading ODI run scorers with 18426 runs from 463 matches, followed by Virat Kohli with 12344 runs from 262 matches. Former Indian captains Sourav Ganguly (11221 from 308 ODIs), Rahul Dravid (10768 from 340 matches), and MS Dhoni (10599 from 347) are the remaining players in the top five.

Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut for India against Ireland on June 23, 2007. He has represented the country in the ODI World Cups in 2015 and 2019. He finished the 2019 World Cup as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, with 648 runs, and set a record by scoring five hundreds in one World Cup.

Rohit holds the record for the highest individual score in one-day internationals, with 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 at Eden Gardens. In 233 One-Day Internationals, he scored 9376 runs at an average of 48.58, with 29 centuries and 45 fifties.
