According to reports, Australian Test opener David Warner was unaware of his manager’s wild accusations against senior cricket administrators this week and provided no authorization for the statements to be made.

After the infamous ball-tampering scandal in 2018, which is regarded as one of the biggest controversies in modern-day cricket, then-captain Steve Smith and his deputy Warner were handed one-year bans, while opener Cameron Bancroft was given a nine-month suspension. Warner was also banned from ever taking a leadership position in Australian cricket for the rest of his life.

Warner Said, We’ve Got To Reverse Swing The Ball – James Erskine

Earlier, David Warner’s manager, James Erskine, stated that officials permitted players to tamper with the ball more than a year before the sandpaper gate scandal in 2018.

“[Two officials] in the changing room in Hobart [in 2016] were basically berating the team for losing to South Africa,” he said.

“Warner said, ‘we’ve got to reverse swing the ball. And the only way we can reverse swing the ball is basically by tampering with it’ – so they were told to do it.”

They’re Really Unhelpful And Unfounded Comments – Nick Hockley

According to sources, he spoke without Warner’s knowledge or consent. Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has categorically denied Erskine’s allegations.

“I think they’re really unhelpful and unfounded comments. I think as an investigation was done at the time – but I think it’s been said repeatedly, if new information is to be brought forward then as with any matter of integrity there are those avenues to bring forward information at any stage,” he told SEN Radio on Friday morning.

Todd Greenberg, the CEO of the Australian Cricketers Association, also responded to Erskine’s claims. He said on SEN, “I heard those comments from James Erskine yesterday, I can’t speak to any of that. I don’t know to be fair. I know James is a very passionate advocate for those he represents … he’s got every right to be upset at how that matter was handled. I don’t personally think it’s helpful for any of us to look backwards. I think we’ve done that already way too much … that’s probably been lost in the last 24 hours and I hope we can start looking forward rather than backwards.”
