BCCI Calls SGM On May 29 To Discuss 'Upcoming Cricket Season'; Hosting Of T20 World Cup Key Topic

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM), to be held virtually on May 29, on the ‘upcoming cricket season, with the T20 World Cup, which is slated for October-November in India, as a key matter to be discussed.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah, in a notice sent to the State associations, said, “Notice is hereby given for the Special General Meeting (SGM) of the BCCI which will be held on May 29, 2021, virtually, to transact the following business: ‘Discussion on the upcoming cricket season in view of the pandemic situation prevailing in India. You are requested to attend the meeting. Link to the meeting will be shared in due course.'”
The BCCI SGM has been scheduled just ahead of the ICC meeting on June 1. The governing council is likely to decide on the staging of the T20 World Cup – whether to keep it in India, despite the worrying covid-19 situation in the country, or move it to the UAE where the IPL 2020 was held and has been kept on stand-by.
BCCI to discuss the remainder of the IPL 2021 and the T20 World Cup in the SGM
It was reported by Cricbuzz that the notice by Jay Shah was sent late on Tuesday (May 18) night, and hence the BCCI officials were not immediately available for explanations on the upcoming meeting.
Apart from the staging of the World Cup, it is believed that the emergency meeting could also discuss the remainder of the IPL 2021 season, which saw 29 out of 56 league games completed before being paused indefinitely. However, usually, the SGMs are held on one specific topic.
Earlier, BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has said that the board will face losses amounting to around INR 2500 crore – maybe more – if the IPL 2021 isn’t completed. The board is eyeing the pre or post-T20 World Cup window to conduct the remaining season.
“Lot of things are involved and we will slowly start working on them. If we fail to complete the IPL, the loss will be close to INR 2500 crore (USD 340 million approx). That is going by early estimates,” Ganguly was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.
